We welcome Milaad Hashmi to the firm as a new associate.
Milaad started with Kornfeld LLP as an articling student in August 2020. He received a Juris Doctorate from the Peter A. Allard School of Law at the University of British Columbia and a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in political science and economics, from Simon Fraser University.
As an articling student at Kornfeld, Milaad started off by drafting contracts for developers, conducting due diligence on share-purchases, attending client meetings, and carrying out legal research. In later months, he also gained experience representing clients before the Supreme Court of British Columbia and the Provincial Court of British Columbia.
“I’ve also had the opportunity to attend trials and appeals, sit in on strategy sessions and, perhaps most importantly, ask a lot of questions. There’s no shortage of talented and experienced counsel at the firm. You’ve just got to put yourself out there and inquire,” Milaad said.
During his legal studies at UBC, Milaad took an active role in multiple community projects. This included counselling of low-income clients as part of the Law Students’ Legal Advice Program, and presenting the Charter of Rights and Freedoms to high school students.
As a legal professional, he tries to promote legal awareness where and when he can.
“In law school, you’re taught to prevent problems before they arise in contracts and settle disputes in court. And yet, these skills amount to very little if people aren’t informed about their rights and responsibilities in the first place,” Milaad said.
It was his university experience, combined with an internship at a real estate firm, that got Milaad interested in property law, which ultimately brought him to Kornfeld LLP.
“I interned at a real estate investment firm and I had a few great profs in law school who specialized in property law,” Milaad said. “Owing to that experience, this area of law was always top of mind. So, when I was looking for a firm, Kornfeld naturally stood out for its reputation and expertise in the area of real estate development. This firm always seemed like the perfect fit.”
